And the Oscar Goes to... the Commercials for Being Way Better than the SuperBowl Ads

So I watched the Academy awards last night and was pleasantly surprised to see a plethora of good commercials. After a disappointing year of Super Bowl commercials, I was happy to see some good ads during the Oscars. I was most excited to see the commercial for the iPhone. This is the first commercial for the product that is due out in June. It was a collage of clips from television shows and movies of characters picking up the phone and saying hello. It is very fast paced with 30 total hellos (a little more than one per second.)I thought it was a cleaver idea for an ad. It is funny with some scenes from comedies like Zoolander and Anchor Man. I thought it was a little surprising that the ad is running so early with four months before the iPhone is even on the market.

ANother interesting ad was the McDonald's commercial. It was a bunch of different kids running around to each other and speaking in different languages. The last kid spoke English and said "Dad's makin' dinner." The kids get excited and run off. Then it shows the dads walk in with McDonald's bags. This seems different from other McDonald's ads because you don't know what the ad is for until the very end. They usually through those arches all over the television. This one was much more subtle. I think it feeds into the stereotypes that dads don't cook and that the only way he can feed his children is by purchasing take-out. On the other hand that is exactly what my dad did when we were growing up so I guess I can't be too critical of that. All in all it was a cute ad.

"On a scale of 1 to Awesome... I'm the Sh*t" - Gym Class Heroes

This week I went to Best Buy and purchased the latest release from the Gym Class Heroes- "As Cruel As School Children." After hearing the name of the band my initial thought was that they were going to be another dumb-ass Emo band... but after seeing their hilarious video on MTV I discovered that I was very wrong.

They are a four-piece hip-hop band with some alternative rock influences. This record was reminiscent of the early Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff albums. The songs were of a funny subject matter with qulaity music behind the lyrics. The album has a high school/teenage theme to it. The songs would appeal to a younger audience, but are so worth a listen. You'll definitely get a few good laughs out of it. There are tracks about MySpace and a student/teacher love affair. in between some of the songs are poems read by Travis the lead singer. They are called sloppy love jingles. They are a nice addition to the record weaving in and out between songs. It definitely adds an interesting creative element to the record.

The band is linked to the band Fall Out Boy. Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy became interested in GCH and signed them to his label Decaydance, which is under the larger label Fueld By Ramen. Patrick Stump, another member from Fall Out Boy, appears on GCH's single "Cupid's Chokehold." This is a great song and the video is pretty funny too.

I definitely recomend this record. It is lighthearted and funny. It has a sound unlike anything I have heard in a long time. It has great beats, the singer has a nice voice and then placement of songs on the record is very nice. At the very least check out the single "Cupid's Chokehold." It's just right for Valentine's Day.

Rating- 8.5 popsicles out of 10.

Hello World

This is my first post on my first blog ever! It's quite an exciting moment. I'll try not to get too excited and start throwing in unnecessary capital letters and exclamation points, but no promises! With this new space to say whatever the hell I want, I have decided that I will focus my rants and raves to album reviews and critiques of popular YouTube videos and commercials. Each week will be dedicated to one of those topics and maybe more if the mood strikes me (or Morgan says I have to). I think this will be fun and hopefully not painful for others to read. I hope everyone out there is doing well. Have a great weekend and see you next time in the blogosphere.
Signing out,
Ashley

Look out for my next post when I review the newest release from the Gym Class Heroes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
